TESTOSTERONE IN MEN

The male hormone testosterone and the substance it manufactures within the body, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), are responsible for male sexual drive and interest.

Major portion of this testosterone is produced by the testes and is available in the blood in two forms, free and bound. Free testosterone amounts to about 1-2% of the total and is biologically active. The availability of the remaining testosterone is regulated by binding substances; testosterone is either bound to albumin or globulin. Globulin-bound testosterone is biologically inactive, while albumin-bound is biologically active. In younger men, albumin and globulin-bound testosterone exist in equal amounts. With increasing age, however, globulin-bound testosterone levels rise. This goes to say that older men do produce as much testosterone as younger men, but more of it is not biologically available. Researchers found that male sexual satisfaction and performance varied across age groups. Although testosterone is widely known as the male hormone, it is less well known that it is also a critically important hormone for women.
